We brought this exciting event to the UAE through the organizers of the Miss India-Worldwide committee in New York. It took place at the 7 star Jumeira Beach Hotel on October 20, 1999 and selected a winner who represented the Indian community of the UAE at the world finals, which were held in New York on November 22, 1999. The following countries were also represented: USA, UK, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica, St Lucia, Grenada, South Africa, Singapore, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Netherlands, Denmark, Philippines, Thailand, Surinam, Nepal, Hong Kong, Mauritius and India at present. Past finals have been held in New York, Singapore, Bombay and elsewhere. We would like to add representatives from Oman and Bahrain in the future. Winners of such pageants have had the opportunity to excel in the entertainment industry. Ruby Bhatia is one such ex-winner who has been, (along with others from Canada: Kamal Sidhu, Rishma Malik and Kim Jagtiani) very popular on Indian TV, in the modeling world and in films. In their respective countries, the winners have found a fair amount of fame and fortune and landed lucrative modeling and acting contracts. Ruby hosted the show with her characteristic charm and wit. Our panel of judges included actress and VJ Malaika Arora, Popstar - Bhangra Prince: Sukhbir, VJ and ace choreographer Achla Sachdev, Ms India-Worldwide '98, Melissa Bhagat, local personality and media person Nirmal Khanna. Popstar Anaida performed as did some local dance troupes. Melissa crowned the first ever Miss India UAE at the function. This contest was open to all ladies, resident in the Emirates, of Indian heritage, between the ages of 17 and 27. There were four competitive rounds, which complied with the pageant's
